Tuesday 14th May

Just had a telephone call from Bobby Rego (5.45am his time!). After 2 days, our ILTT team is in first place by 1,000 points. Needless to say, they are ecstatic!

Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day, flat calm. They had a great boat and managed to boat 7 striped marlin, a wahoo, a large dolphin and several other smaller fish. Seems they had so many multiple hook-ups that twice Danny had to sacrifice his fish and get cleaned spooled while they chased someone else's fish (Bobby's??).

The hotel is great, the boats are great and they find the tournament very well organized. Today they have the boat that is presntly in fourth place and tomorrow they have the boat that is presently in seventh place. If they are successful overall, Bobby will call me tomorrow night.

As I get news, I will send it to everyone.

Tight lines.

Bermudians take huge lead after day two of Fourth Annual Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship Tournament Cayman Islands, Los Cabos Mexico, Portugal and Mississippi, USA, teams in top five halfway through four-day world-class competition

LOS CABOS, BAJA MEXICO --- A team representing Bermuda took a giant leap from 12th to first place over 41 other teams from 22 countries in day two of the Fourth Annual Rolex/International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Offshore Championship Tournament.

They caught and released seven striped marlin for 300 points each plus two dorado and a wahoo for points per pound. Their two-day total is 2522 points.
The four blue water anglers are Danny Fox and Bobby Rego, both of Hamilton, Bermuda along with Buddy Sowers, Richmond, Va., and his son Casey Sowers, N. Palm Beach, Fla.
The four-day competition has attracted teams of the world’s best blue water anglers who won one of 89 IGFA qualifying events in 27 countries worldwide in 2002.
The leaders had advanced by winning the Bermuda International Light Tackle Tournament.
“We had an excellent captain and crew that were great at spotting fish,” said Fox. “That was probably the biggest factor.” Fox said they used live bait in mackerel, mullet and jacks.
Moving into second place with 1584 points is a team from the Cayman Islands. Charles Ebanks, Savannah, BWI, and Al Parsons, Chris Briggs, and David Alberga of Grand Cayman are representing the Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament.
Ebanks is also the leading angler with 1284 points.
In third place two points back at 1582 is the team representing the Los Cabos (Mexico) Billfish Tournament. The team is made up of Yuri Shiba, Tom Shiba, Tony Nungaray, Don Loros, Wade Shiba all of Los Cabos.
Holding fourth place is the Club Nautico team from Tavira, Portugal, with 1542 points. Gulfport, Mississippi’s Sonny Johnson Memorial Tournament team at 1500 points is fifth.
Also making a giant leap from 28th to sixth place was the team representing the Georgia Governor’s Cup, Savannah, Ga., USA. Tuesday they caught four striped marlin to add to their lone sailfish from Monday. They have 1300 points.
The day one leaders from western Australia who caught four marlin on Monday were shut out on Tuesday. They fell to seventh place with 1297 points.
Teams are representing the countries of Australia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Italy, Jamaica, Mauritius, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Senegal, the United States, Venezuela, and the West Indies.
Six teams are from Mexico. The U.S. is represented by 14 teams from 12 states.
The 42 teams draw for different boats to fish on each day. They are fishing for three species of marlin (blue, black and striped) along with sailfish, spearfish and swordfish. The catches are scored and released alive at the boat in accordance with the IGFA tournament rules. Bonus points will be given to the team releasing the most billfish.
The teams will also receive points for tuna, wahoo and dorado up to two fish of each species per day above the minimum size limit of 25 lbs. Local charities receive the donations of all fish weighed.
At the halfway mark 98 striped marlin and a single sailfish have been caught and released. Fish weighed at the dock include 21 wahoo, 10 dorado and one tuna.
The team with the most points at the end of the four days of competition will receive Rolex timepieces and trophies. Eighteen other prizes will be presented including ones to the three top anglers and captains and top three places for the heaviest tuna, wahoo and dorado.
The tournament headquarters is the Hotel Finisterra.
The offshore championship is one of two world-class series fishing events that include the third annual Rolex/IGFA Inshore Championship Tournament held earlier in the month. In that tournament 32 anglers representing nearly 50 qualifying tournaments worldwide competed in light-tackle and fly-fishing competition for bonefish, tarpon, permit, redfish and snook in Islamorada, in the Florida Keys. Dr. Mike Gallops, Naples, Fla, won the event.
Besides title sponsor Rolex other sponsors include Aero México, Aftco Bluewater Sportswear, Blue Water Boats & Sportfishing Magazine, Bodo Muche Studio-Foundry, Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, Eagle Claw, Finisterra Hotel, Guy Harvey, Hatteras, Hook & Tackle Outfitters, King Sailfish Mounts, Mexican Tourism Board, Mold Craft Products, Inc., Murray Products Fighting Chairs, Norcross Marine Products, Pacifico/Corona Beverages and Penn Rods & Reels.
The IGFA is a nonprofit, membership-supported, conservation and record-keeping organization founded in 1939 with members in over 120 countries. The association welcomes visitors to the 60,000 square foot IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach, Florida. LOS CABOS, BAJA MEXICO ---Despite catching only one weight fish, anglers representing Bermuda held onto first place over 41 other teams from 22 countries in day three of the Fourth Annual Rolex/International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Offshore Championship Tournament.
With one fishing day left and a single wahoo to show for their third round efforts the Bermuda teams’ total rose slightly to 2599 points. In Tuesday’s round two they had caught and released seven striped marlin for a huge push of 2100 points and the biggest lead of the event.
Narrowing the margin to 417 points and into second place is the team representing the Los Cabos (Mexico) Billfish Tournament. Made up of Yuri Shiba, Tom Shiba, Tony Nungaray, Don Loros, Wade Shiba all of Los Cabos they caught two striped marlin. They now have 2182 points.

Bermuda team ends with “Hot” day to win Fourth Annual Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship Tournament. New Orleans, La., USA; Cayman Islands and two Mexico teams complete the top five positions of world-class competition

LOS CABOS, BAJA MEXICO ---Despite running “cold”, then “hot”, then cold again, anglers representing Bermuda ended hot enough to beat 41 other teams from 22 countries in the final round of the Fourth Annual Rolex/International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Offshore Championship Tournament.

Danny Fox and Bobby Rego, both of Hamilton, Bermuda, along with Buddy Sowers, Richmond, Va., and his son Casey Sowers, N. Palm Beach, Fla., caught a total of 15 striped marlin over the four days. Seven of the fish were caught and released on Tuesday and then another seven in the final round Thursday. Their total for the week was 4799 points including 100 bonus points for the most billfish releases (15) in the tournament.
The official scoring was announced at noon PCT on Friday.
The competition attracted teams of some of the world’s finest blue water anglers who had won one of 89 IGFA qualifying events in 27 countries worldwide in 2002. Friday’s winning team had advanced by capturing the Bermuda International Light Tackle Tournament last year.
The four men on the Bermuda team each received engraved Rolex timepieces and Bodo Muche bronze sculptured trophies for their win.
“We literally ran cold and hot all week long,” said Casey Sowers. Ironically none of the quartet had ever caught a striped marlin before this event. ”Thankfully we learned during the difficult days of fishing what we were doing wrong in missing fish with our techniques. The learning paid off in the final round.”
Rego added that the team ran out of bait shortly after noon with still over two hours of fishing left. “There were marlin all around us,” he said. “It was an amazing site.”
The final round was one of the most prolific days of tournament fishing any local officials could remember along the Baja California Peninsula and in the Sea of Cortez. Tournament director Sue Vermillion recorded an “amazing” 94 striped marlin. The catch/release average for marlin the three prior days had been 51.
Finishing second was the team representing the New Orleans, La., USA Billfish Tournament. They caught and released seven of 10 striped marlin hooked in the closing round. Their final score was 4241 points. The Louisiana team was made up of Jacque Kuchta, Metairie; Bobby Green, New Orleans; Robert Perez, Boury; Nancy Bellemare, Metairie, and Scott Leininger, Mandeville. Green was the highest scoring angler in the tournament with 2441 points, catching eight marlin at 300 points each for the bulk of his score.
Finishing in third was a team representing the Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament. That team was made up of Al Parsons, Chris Briggs and David Alberga all of Grand Cayman, along with Charles Ebanks, Savannah, GC/BWI. Their total was 3384.
The second and third place teams received Penn Rods and Reels plus sculptures.
The Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament team was fourth with 3332 points and the Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore Tournament team finished fifth with 3300 points to round out the top five.
Oscar Daccarett, from Los Cabos was the second highest angler with 2400 points. Luis Ceia, Club Nautico de Tavira/Shimano, Tavira, Portugal was third with 2100 points.
